Getting Ready for the Holidays, Robin Erb Style

Prepping Tiffany of Boston Fab for her night on the town!

The holidays are a time for celebration with your friends and family. This year on December 11th, I had a a small get together at my studio on Newbury Street. I invited local bloggers and my marketing team. We all snacked on hummus, cheese and gorgeous desserts from Finale

One blogger who came was Tiffany from Boston Fab. She blogs about everything fabulous in Boston from events to parties to fashion shows, all while critiquing the unworthy along the way. After she had something to eat and drink, I just knew that I had to do her makeup. She admitted to not normally wearing a lot of makeup during the day, but wearing a lot before going out. I decided to give her a gorgeous night look that she could also tone down for the day. I gave her a glossy pink lip with a bright natural eye. She looked beautiful and ready for the holidays!

I also worked on the eyebrows of a few people on my marketing team, including ValerieMariel and Jeannie. One of the members of my blog team, Vicky came up to me and admitted that after learning about the perfect red lip from me, she had to try the look! I gave her a bright matte red lip and she looked absolutely stunning.

While we all sipped on wine and listened to holiday tunes, everyone talked about their holiday plans. Overall, I would say the night was quite successful. I had the opportunity to spend time with old friends and even make new ones. It was a great way to start off the holiday season and I hope that this will eventually become an annual event. Winter Months Mean Time for Vacation: Get Ready with a Brazilian

Afraid to wax? Don’t be!

As the weather gets colder and we are all thinking about our next fabulous vacation, remember: it all starts with a great wax. Although the word Brazilian brings immediate thoughts of pain, panic, and possibly passing out, relax!

When you have done anything for a long enough time you learn tricks of the trade, and I have learned quite a few that truly limit the pain of the experience. In fact, many of my clients tell me that it barely hurts!

In five to ten minutes you can be completely bare and ready for fun. I use a soy-based wax that, along with some great conversation, eliminates a lot of the pain associated with waxing.

I recommend waxing in the winter months every four to five weeks. It is important to continue waxing even if it is not bikini season because continued waxing allows the hair follicles to stay small. That way the hair grows back in smooth and thinner.

This is also why you should never shave. Every time you shave, your hair follicles come in thick, hard, itchy and bumpy; never a good thing. To prevent ingrown hairs, use a hand loofah in a circular motion between waxing.

Remember, the snow hitting the ground does not mean you get a break from waxing. Keeping up with your Brazilians will keep you looking fabulous on your vacations and help make your summer waxes less painful.

My Sister’s Up-Keeper

Christian (Right) and her band Bad Girlfriend, looking glam and stage-ready!

I love doing makeup, and I also love music, especially when it is my sister playing! That’s right, my sister Christian is in two bands, and sometimes as a special treat (for both of us) I get to do her makeup! The most important thing I have to remember about doing makeup for the stage is that it has to be long lasting and visible from far away, so all her fans can see her.

For visibility, high pigment is key; I like to use bright colors. I also love to use shimmery makeup for the lights to pick up on. A little bit of shimmer on the brow or on the cheek looks really nice. I also love using Bourjois Volume Clubbing Mascara because it is long lasting. It is great for playing on the stage and dancing around in the audience.

But you don’t have to take my word for it. I was recently talking to my sister before she left for a tour of the UK with Cass McCombs, and we talked about her favorite stage looks (done, of course, by Yours Truly). She loves when I work on her eyebrows. She has even told me that whether someone has “thin eyebrows or thick eyebrows [I can make them] look amazing.” To top it off, we have the same style, so whenever I do Christian’s makeup she gives me the freedom to do what I think will look best.

Christian loves my eyebrow work and the shimmering makeup, but my skincare secrets are still her favorite. She explained that good skincare is essential before applying makeup. So, if you aspire to become a great musician like my sister, stop by Skin Deep Med Spa for makeup and skincare tips before you hit the stage.

Beautiful Solutions to Christmas Shopping

Credit: D Sharon Pruitt

It’s the time of year again! Time for Christmas trees, mistletoe and endless holiday parties. As Christmas approaches, we’re all met with the task of getting the perfect Christmas gift for our family and friends. So here’s my solution to shopping for the perfect gift for moms, aunts, sisters and best friends: gift certificates for spa treatments at Robin Erb Skincare!

Every girl loves spa treatments, but not everyone would get it for herself. That’s why gift certificates for spa treatments are such a great Christmas present. Plus, you’ll get 25% off any gift certificate by mentioning the Robin Erb Skincare blog!

For Moms and Aunts:

Give these hardworking ladies a great skin-rejuvenating facial! Especially in the winter months, it’s important to get rid of dead skin and keep skin moisturized to prevent wrinkles. My Pumpkin Peel treatment and other facials are great for pampering and keeping skin young and healthy.

For the Party Queen:

If you’ve got a glamorous girl friend with a lot of holiday parties to attend, the perfect gift would be a gift coupon for Eyelash Extensions. Eyelash Extensions not only keeps eyes glamorous 24/7 but she won’t have to worry about mascara smudging on her face while she’s out having fun.

For the Ones That Need Makeovers:

Let’s face it, we all have a few girl friends who are beautiful but just aren’t getting their look right. Gift coupons are a great way to push these ladies in the right direction. So if you’ve got a friend who might need to re-shape her brows, give her a gift certificate for Eyebrow Waxing. And for one’s that aren’t comfortable with makeup, a gift certificate for my Makeup Lessons would boost up her confidence in no time.

Give your loved ones the chance to feel beautiful this holiday season at Robin Erb Skincare, or simply treat yourself to some pampering. Which treatment would you like to try out the most?

Robin’s Secrets to a Smokey Eye

Smokey eyes — Robin Erb style

The smokey eye is a classic look that many women try to emulate. However, I have found that often times women don’t understand exactly the way to go about it. Before you even start, it is important to understand one word: blend. That is absolutely crucial when it comes to creating a sexy, smokey eye.

First do your eyes. Many women will do their foundation first, but since you use such intense and dark colors when doing a smokey eye, the eyeshadow often get can all over your face. Once you’re done with your eyes, brush off the excess shadow with a brush and do your foundation.

  1. The first step is to apply your color from the lid up into your crease and blend. Also, smudge your smokey color under your eye as well. I prefer to use high pigment colors like Makeup Forever’s Purple 92 Eyeshadow or deep greys, browns and blacks, but this look can be pulled off with almost any color.
  2. Next, right under your brow, brush a highlighter.
  3. Continue with eye liner inside the lids rather than on top. I have found that Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Zero works best.
  4. Finish the look off with tons of mascara.

When you do a smokey eye at home you can’t forget about equipment. I really like the MAC 242 Shader Brush for blending. They also offer a tapered blending brush that works really well. After you’re done with your eye and your foundation is done, many people like to go with a nude or glossy lip, unless you’re going for the “goth chic” look as I call it with a dark lip.

When it comes to a smokey eye, practice makes perfect. I recommend taking lessons with me at my studio if you want to know how to perfect the look.

Eyebrows: A DIY Danger (Getting Good Brows isn’t Tweezy)

DIY Brows

This girl is in for a DIY disaster!

To get the perfect pair of eyebrows, I’ll offer you this advice: don’t do them yourself! The shape of your brows has a dramatic affect on your facial appearance, so it’s important to get them right. Achieving symmetrical eyebrows is a difficult task that should only be done by a skilled professional. Don’t believe me? Read on, and I’ll explain what’s wrong with shaping your own brows.

  1. You’re using a mirror. What you’re seeing is the reflection of your face, not your face itself, so what you’re seeing is different than what other people see. Why would alter your appearance if you don’t have a good vantage point?
  2. Your dominant hand always goes for the brow on the opposite side of the face. If you’re right-handed, then you begin with your left brow. I know whether someone is left or right-handed by looking at their eyebrows because they fixate on the opposite brow, and it’s always over-tweezed!
  3. It takes a certain level of skill to create symmetrical eyebrows. I spent years perfecting my technique, because it’s not easy to shape one eyebrow evenly to the other. If you keep plucking in hopes that they’ll even out, you might end up with unnaturally thin eyebrows.
  4. Know where you arch is. I often see women who shape in their arches way too close to the nose, which isn’t where an arch naturally rests. I call this a comma brow, because the brow looks like a comma.
  5. Don’t use a magnifying mirror. No one sees you that close. When you remove little hairs that don’t look like they should be there, it may change the rest of the brow’s appearance. Those little hairs are necessary to the bigger picture.

Five Steps to a Five Minute Face

Fresh Face

With a swipe of pink on your cheeks and lids, you can be fresh-faced and ready to go in five minutes!

Getting ready in the morning is tough for everyone. Your alarm goes off and all you are thinking is five more minutes mom! While the idea of looking beautiful is always nice, at 7:45 it is probably not your first priority. I have five quick steps that will allow you to savor your beauty sleep and start the day on an equally beautiful note.

Step 1: Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! Moisturizer is always the key first step to any great look, especially in the winter when our skin can’t help but dry out.

Step 2: If you need some coverage use a tinted moisturizer. This adds to step number one and also keeps your skin from looking cracked and wrinkled. Avoid powder of all kinds in the winter; by the end of the day your skin will be completely parched.

Step 3: Take a round compact and dust a peachy shimmer on your eyelids. I love the color M.A.C. Petticoat Mineral Skin Finish, which is a Limited Edition and is hard to come by lately! (If you can’t find it at the M.A.C. store I sometimes luck out on eBay.

Step 4: Take that same round compact, same color and everything, and dust it quickly over the apples of your cheeks. This makes you look awake and gives you a great shine for the whole day.

Step 5: To top off this great quick look all you need is a few swipes of mascara and you are good to go for the entire day.

So, although mornings are tough, there is no excuse for not looking great if you follow these Five Steps for a Five Minute Face. Do you have any multitasking products that speed up your routine?

Skincare Without the Parabens

Clear Skin

One of my models sporting a timeless look: youthful, hydrated skin.

As an esthetician I believe that appropriate skincare is one of the most important aspects of maintaining your beautiful look.  That is why I have developed three of my very own, original products that do not have any preservatives or parabens. Here are some of the highlights of each of my three products:

  • Dew-Maker: This product is your everyday moisturizer for the winter.  It has various essential oils that work to hydrate and fix your skin while also keeping you from breaking out.  These essential oils include: lemon and orange which brighten the skin and have an antibacterial agent, and carrot seed which fights wrinkles.  This is easy to use, just shake well and apply!
  • Smooth-Over: This anti-aging serum also has various essential oils that fight off wrinkles.  Some of the top oils in this serum include: borage, evening primrose, and Vitamin E.  This product with leave your skin not only hydrated but incredibly smooth and wrinkle-free.
  • Eye-Candy: A roller-applicator, this product should be applied right around the eyes to keep skin fresh and smooth.  This product uses geranium and carrot seed which work to fight wrinkles and lines around the eyes such as crow’s feet.

As you can tell skin hydration is vital to fighting off wrinkles and keeping your skin looking as fresh as possible and with these three products you can do just that.  Feel free to let me know if you have questions about my products and/or their availability!
